Icemen knock off Mustangs
Wetaskiwin wins on road for third-straight
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
A close, hard-fought Capital Junior Hockey League game went Wetaskiwin's way, with the Icemen scoring a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Mustangs in a game played Oct. 31 at Bill Hunter Arena.
Wetaskiwin's top two point getters figured in the scoring of the game's lone goal through 40 minutes of play.
DJ Bennefield's tally, with Corey Bowie's assist, at 4:58 of the first period held until Brent Mcgugan tied the game for Edmonton 1:01 into the third period.
Dylan Weaver's fifth of the season at 4:07 proved to be the winning goal, with Suede Omeasoo adding some insurance with his 10th of the season with 5:17 remaining.
bennefield would finish with a three-point night.
Jeremy Balyk held the Mustangs off the scoresheet the rest of the way, and Wetaskiwin had a 3-1 victory, it's third-straight, and an 8-5 record to sit atop the East DIvision Standings.

Icemen overcome slow start to beat Bruins
Wetaskiwin wins second-straight
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
Corey Bowie's second goal of the game 3:22 into the third period broke open a 4-4 tie and lifted the Icemen to a 5-4 victory over the Strathcona Bruins in a Capital Junior Hockey League game played Oct. 26 at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
The Icemen found themselves behind by a pair of goals just 6:06 into the opening period.
But power play goals from Corey Bowie and DJ Bennefield pulled Wetaskiwin even by the first intermission.
In the second frame, Strathcona kept taking a one-goal lead, only to have Wetaskiwin score to tie the contest.
Kevin Liner, also with the man advantage, and Bennefield with his second of the game tied the score with just nine seconds left in the second period.
That set the stage for Corey Bowie's winner early in the third period.
Chris Sharkey was in goal for Wetaskiwin's second-straight win, improving the team to 7-5 on the year.

Icemen lose second straight
Wetaskiwin goes down in battle with division-rivals Beaumont
by Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
After opening the year with three losses, then winning five-straight games, the Icemen dropped their second-straight game when they were beaten 7-5 by the Chiefs in Beaumont Friday, Oct. 19. The loss dropped Wetaskiwin to 5-5 in the Capital Junior Hockey League standings.
Much like the entire season so far, it was a 'streaky' game, with Beaumont scoring the first two goals, Wetaskiwin coming back with three-straight, the Chiefs scoring three-straight times, then the Icemen scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game at five after 40 minutes.
Chris Lang and Joel Tessier, with his seventh of the season, scored for the home team in the final frame to give the Chiefs a 7-5 victory.
Tessier finished with a goal and four assists for Beaumont.
Corey Bowie and DJ Bennefield each had a goal and an assist, while Keaton White had two assists. Brandon Wark, Cory Dupre, and Zack Littlechild also scored for Wetaskiwin.

It took a good Morinville squad to take down the Icemen.

Wetaskiwin's record fell to 5-4 with the defeat.

By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
Suede Omeasoo certainly took charge when it counted most.
The newest member of the Wetaskiwin Icemen scored the final three goals of the game to break open a 3-3 tie and give the Icemen a 6-3 victory over the Beverly Warriors in a Capital Junior Hockey League game played Friday, Oct. 12 at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.

Icemen win 4th straight game
Wetaskiwin overcomes two goal deficit to beat Merchants in OT
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
The Icemen are making it somewhat routine to record a come-from-behind victory on a Sunday early in this 2012-13 Capital Junior Hockey League season.
One week ago, Wetaskiwin, still without a victory through three games at that point, trailed Fort Saskatchewan 3-1 heading to the third period, then erupted for four unanswered goals to beat the Hawks 5-3.
That comeback has now fueled a four-game winning streak, after Wetaskiwin recorded yet another comeback victory Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
Trailing St. Albert 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Icemen clawled their way into the game in the third period when Corey Bowie and Keaton White scored to force overtime.
Then in OT, with the Icemen enjoying a four on three man advantage, Bowie ripped a slapshot past St. Albert goaltender Justin Pawlenchuk at the 2:01 mark to begin Thanksgiving weekend celebrations at the Civic Centre.
Bowie finished the game with four points, while Keaton White and Dylan Weaver each had a goal and an assist.
Chris Sharkey, who struggled between the pipes, stopped 21 of 24 shots, while the Icemen peppered Pawlenchuk with 52 shots, including 18 in the second period and 20 in the third period.
Wetaskiwin's four game winning streak lifts the team above the .500 mark for the first time this season, at 4-3.
Wetaskiwin has now recorded four wins in an eight day span, having also beaten Beaumont 8-7 Tuesday and Leduc 5-0 on Friday.
The Icemen return to action Friday, Oct. 12 with a home game against the Beverly Warriors. Face-off at 7:30 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.

Icemen win again
Wetaskiwin won it's third straight game in a week when it travelled to Leduc Oct. 5 and beat up on the Riggers by a score of 5-0.
It's been a remarkable turnaround for the Icemen who didn't look very good in season-openeing losses to the Royals, Red Wings and Riggers.
Since then, Wetaskiwin has beaten Fort Saskatchewan. Beaumont, and on Friday evening, Leduc.
The Icemen will go after their fourth-straight victory when they host the St. Albert Merchants Sunday, oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.

Icemen win second straight
Bennefield's handful leads Wetaskiwin to satisfying victory in Beaumont
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
There's no doubt Wetaskiwin Icemen players, especially that handful of veterans back for a third season with the team, had circled October 2nd on their calendar.
It was the night the Icemen, eliminated from the playoffs by Beaumont the past two seasons, would meet the hated Chiefs for the first time this season.
And the Icemen, who openeded the season with thee losses before beating Fort Saskatchewan Sept. 30, were ready.
Zack Littlechild, with a pair, Brandon Wark, Dylan McKay and Mitchell Bowie all scored before the game was 14 minutes old, giving the Icemen an early 5-0 lead.
Marc Tessier's power play goal before the period ended gave Beaumont some life, and after DJ Bennefield tallied early in the second, three straight Chiefs goals made it a 6-4 game after 40 minutes.
All that led to a wild and wacky third period.
Beaumont pulled to within a goal with Rylan Taylor's marker just 1:13 into the third period.
Bennefield, who finished with two goals and three assists, scored on the power play at 5:21 to regain Wetaskiwin's two-goal advantage.
Beaumont's Alex Belzevick made it a one-goal game 7:02.
The teams battled back and forth until Corey Bowie's third of the season on the power play with 5:19 remaining once again gave Wetaskiwin a two goal advantage.
Tyler Warchola again pulled the Chiefs to within a goal with just 4:28 left, but rookie Jeremy Balyk shut the door the rest of the way to earn his first victory as a Wetaskiwin Icemen in what turned into an 8-7 final score.
Dylan Weaver earned three assists to back Wetaskiwin's potent offensive attack.

Huge third period lifts Icemen to first win of season
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin icemen
The situation was quite bleak for the Icemen as they approached the third period of their Sept. 30 Capital Junior Hockey League game at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
The Icemen, riding a three-game losing streak to begin the 2012-13 CJHL season, trailed Fort Saskatchewan 3-1 after two periods of play.
Wetaskiwin, missing head coach Rick Gregory, who was serving the final game of his two game suspension, and still without vets Jordan Howe, Lucas Recknagle, Steven Walker and also Kevin Liner, who picked up a game misconduct at the end of Friday's loss to Leduc, appeared headed for an 0-4 start, further digging deeper the hole it was falling into.
Then, the game, and the Icemen season turned around in dramatic fashion.
First, Dawson Kress pulled Wetaskiwin to within a goal at the 4:39 mark.
Dallas Graham evened the scored at 7:27.
With 8:06 remaining in regulation, Kress scored his second of the game to give Wetaskiwin its first lead.
Corey Bowie's goal just five seconds later ensured Wetaskiwin would win its first game of the season, setting a record for the fastest two goals in team history in the process.
Chris Sharkey held off Fort Saskatchewan the rest of the win for his first win of the season, and Wetaskiwin had finally hit the win column after beating the Hawks 5-3.
Keaton White was the other Wetaskiwin goal scorer.

Icemen fall to arch-rival Leduc.
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
With no Rick Gregory behind the bench, the Icemen head coach serving the first of a two-game suspension, and veterans Kevin Liner, Jordan Howe, Steven Walker and Lucas Recknagle all unavailable, the icemen fell 4-1 to arch-rival Leduc in a game played Sept. 28 at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
Wetaskiwin players appeared listless and mounted little offensive pressure.
Carson Powlik with a first period goal, and Luc Cote and Carter Huebner with second period tallies gave Leduc a comfortable 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Tom Fortin gave Wetaskiwin some life when he picked up the only point of the night for the Icemen with 5:21 left, but Huebner's second of the night sealed the deal in the final minute.
Chris Sharkey was in net for the loss.

Controversy in Edmonton
Gregory kicked out in loss to Red Wings
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
Sometimes, a person just reaches their boiling point...
Rick Gregory, and a majority of the fans in attendance, certainly had enough by the 1:59 mark of the third period during a Sept. 26 Capital Junior Hockey game between the Wetaskiwin Icemen and North Edmonton Red Wings at Londonderry Arena.
Gregory had just witnessed a North Edmonton goal that had given the home team a 4-1 lead less than two minutes into the second period.
Problem was, the Red Wings scored the goal while utlizing six skaters, and a goaltender. The Icemen knew it, the fans knew it, and even the officials admitted knowing it.
But the goal stood!
Gregory voiced his unhappiness over the back-breaking goal, was handed a game misconduct and a subsequent two-game suspension.
The Icemen never recovered, and fell 4-1 to the Red WIngs.
The teams were tied at one after 20 minutes thanks to an Icemen goal from Corey Bowie.
But two second-period goals by the Wings and the early third period goal that should have been disallowed finished off Wetaskiwin, ensuring the Icemen would start the season with back-to-back defeats.
Garret Montour was in goal for the loss.

Icemen beaten by Royals in CJHL season opener
By Dale Cory Wetaskiwin Icemen
A three-goal second period propelled the visiting Edmonton Royals to a 4-2 victory over the hometown Wetaskiwin Icemen Friday, Sept. 21 in the Capital Junior Hockey League season opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first period, Kevin Liner turned on the red light 4:36 into the middle frame to give Wetaskiwin its first goal of the season.
However, the Royals erupted for thee tallies in less than six minutes, including a power play goal from Ryan D'Amore, to take a two-goal cushion to the dressing room.
The Icemen fought their way back into the game when DJ Bennefield capped off a two-point night with a power play goal 90 seconds into the third period.
But Wetaskiwin could not pull even, and an empty net goal made it a 4-2 final for the Edmonton Royals.

The Icemen finished off the exhibition season this last Saturday with an easy 10-5 drubbing of the Edmonton Mustangs, with DJ Bennefield and Corey Bowie each scoring three goals.
New goaltender Chris Sharkey looked good, allowing just one goal through the first 30 minutes of the game.
The Icemen, who finished with the second-best regular season record in 2011-12 but were bounced for the playoffs in the second round by Beaumont, are looking to continue moving up the CJHL ladder in the 2012-13 season.

Icemen bounced from CJHL playoffs
Wetaskiwin goes down to Beaumont for second-straight year
By Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
The Chiefs prevailed once again.
Beaumont scored seven-straight goals to overcome an early 3-0 deficit and defeat the Wetaskiwin Icemen 7-5 in a Capital Junior Hockey League quarterfinal game played Friday in Beaumont.
The Chiefs, defending league champions, eliminated Wetaskiwin from the playofrfs for the second-straight year, ending this series in four games after a five-game showstopper one year ago.
Wetaskiwin fans easily outnumbered Beaumont fans three-to-one, and when the IIcemen erupted for three goals in the game's first two-and-a-half minutes, it appeared the teams would be headed to a game five.
But The Chiefs battled back to tie the game at three after one period, and dominated the second period with another four goals to take command of the game and win the series.
East Division teams Beaumont and the Edmonton Royals now move into the CJHL's final four.
The provincials are set for April in Okotoks.

Icemen score late goal to beat Beaumont
Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
Dylan McKay's second goal of the game with just 55 seconds remaining in regulation time gave the Icemen a 3-2 victory over the Beaumont Chiefs in a Capital Junior Hockey League quarterfinal game played Wednesday at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
While the Icemen still trail the Chiefs 2-1 in the Best of 5 series, momentum definitely shifted to the Wetaskiwin side with the exciting victory, played in front of more than 600 fans in Wetaskiwin.
Faced with a must-win situation, Wetaskiwin grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Brandon Wark scored his first goal of the playoffs. However, the lead was short-lived, as Justin Wood tied the game just 20 seconds later.
McKay gave the Icemen a 2-1 lead midway through the second period.
That lead held until the mid-point of the third period, when Rylan Taylor's point shot found the back of the net to tie the game at two.
With the clock ticking down and overtime looming, the Icemen applied pressure and it paid off when McKay slid the puck past Beaumont goaltender Kyle Hynes with 55 seconds left.
Wetaskiwin outshot Beaumont 41-25, with Quinton Bell making 23 saves for the victory in net.
Game four will be played Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Beaumont.
If needed, a fifth and deciding game will go Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.

Gregory turns Icemen franchise around

Lawyer by day - architect by night
The Wetaskiwin Icemen have improved 49 points in the standings since Rick Gregory took over as head coach, and are one of the favourites to win the Capital Junior Hockey League championship this season
Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
"Great guy, great coach, really cares about the players, the organization and the community. He's a great fit for this team at this time."
Grant MacDonald, in his second season as an assistant coach with the Wetaskiwin Icemen, can speak to the attributes of head coach Rick Gregory more than most people.
When Gregory, a partner in SIRRS LLP Law Firm in Wetaskiwin, moved to Wetaskiwin in 2006, he took over as head coach of the Wetaskiwin Bantam AA team, and, together with MacDonald, led the group of teenagers to a league championship and provincial gold medal.
After coaching Bantam AAA teams in Camrose and Leduc, Gregory was handed control of the Icemen hockey team in the summer of 2010, and the team has flourished ever since.
Wetaskiwin has risen from a three-win, seven-point season in 2009-10, to a 16-win, 37-point season in 2010-2011, to a 28-win, 56-point 2011-12 campaign. The Icemen finished with the second-best record in the entire league.
After failing to qualify for the layoffs for five-straight seasons, in fact, never even coming close, the Icemen made it to the post-season last year, upset Sherwood Park in the first round, and nearly took out the eventual league champion Beaumont Chiefs in the second round.
Much of the credit for the on-ice turnaround goes to Gregory.
"The key word for him is preparation," added MacDonald. "I would certainly say more than any coach at this level, he's more prepared than anyone else. He does his homework on who we play, and what to look out for with those particular teams."
There are many contributing factors to the turnaround experienced by the Wetaskiwin Icemen junior B hockey franchise in the past two years.
Behind the scenes, new directors have come on board to volunteer their time with the goal of giving junior hockey players a memorable experience during their time in an Icemen uniform. The product of that has been increased attendance, support at road games that exceeds every team in the Capital Junior Hockey League, and events like the Pack The Arena promotion Feb. 10, which saw close to 1,000 fans turn out for the final regular season game.
When things are working well behind the scenes, and in the boardroom, it's much easier for the coaching staff to focus on icing a successful product.
That’s quite obvious when one watches what takes place on the Icemen bench during the heat of the battle.
As public address announcer and official scorekeeper at Icemen games, I get the opportunity to view first-hand what takes place on the bench, located only a few feet from the penalty box. A sense of calmness is always prevalent. When Gregory is unhappy with a call, he asks for an explanation from the referee as opposed to the yelling and screaming hockey fans may see from many coaches.
Players undoubtedly feed off that controlled atmosphere, resulting in Wetaskiwin cutting its penalty minutes from one of the worst offenders to one of the least penalized in 2011-12.
And Gregory rarely allows his emotions to get the better of him when he is mad at a players' performance, instead waiting for the right time and place to make his point. Gregory has learned that calling out a players' mistake in front of his teammates often erodes a players' level of confidence.
"I'm probably less emotional on the bench than when I started. Sometimes you need to be the calm amongst the storm. Sometimes they need a pat on the back and sometimes they need a kick in the butt. A coach needs to develop a relationship with his players. You need to get to know how you can best influence them, and how they’re going to take to your coaching essentially. A lot of people don't handle criticism well, let alone a teenager," says Gregory. "With some guys, you can tell them right after a shift if they did something right or wrong, and they’re willing to accept it. Other guys are really hard on themselves and you don’t need to tell them every time they screwed up, especially when everybody in the building saw it, so you don’t need to remind them when they come back to the bench."
It's never easy for a coach to develop a workable relationship with his players. Personalities don’t always mesh.
"We try to preach to the players it's not personal. It’s just coaching, and a coach is there to hold players accountable. I kind of envision it as a kind of bank a coach has to run. If you are going to be taking withdrawals out of that bank every single weekend, there's not going to be a whole lot left in there come the end of the season. Sometime you have to make some deposits and let players know you are on their team and on the same side."
Rick Gregory, who grew up in Winnipeg, was a goaltender during his playing days. He played Midget AAA for the famed Notre Dame Hounds, Junior A with the Flin Flon Bombers and the OCN Blizzard, and NCAA hockey in Minnesota, where he was academic All-American.
Gregory knew from an early age he would have a place behind the bench when he was finished playing.
"From an early age, like 14, I was teaching hockey schools all over Western Canada. I’ve always had that in me. I really enjoy the personal relationships. I’ve coached teams that hardly lost and I’ve coached teams that hardly won. You really learn a lot, and I like the opportunity to influence young people, teach them a few things, and get them on the right track in life – not just in hockey," said Gregory. "It can be really rewarding when you see a player go from a certain situation in September to where he might be at the end of the season. I think players take a lot of confidence from the arena to their job, or their home. There are a lot of lessons you learn in hockey that can carry you through in life too. You learn to be mentally tough."
Given Wetaskiwin's success last season, the Icemen board of directors knew the key to continued success was locking up the services of Rick Gregory, who now has a contract through until the end of the 2013-14 season.
"With his credentials, it is clear why we approached Rick to take on the coaching ranks with the Icemen. It was understood from early discussions that if the club was able to take care of some off-ice administrative duties including fund raising, that we may be able to bring Rick on board to coach the 2010-2011 season," explained Icemen president Rob Dyck. "We managed to put together a strong board of directors that worked very hard to raise funds and started the ground work for the organization."
And now, the organization is ready to take on the rest of the Capital Junior Hockey League.
The Icemen will kick off their push to a CJHL title Friday, Feb. 24 when they face rival Beaumont in the league's Best of 5 quarterfinals.
It's a rematch of last year's quarterfinal series, which the Chiefs won in the final game in overtime.
"I think anybody from our town that goes out to watch our team play - win, lose or draw, will leave thinking, 'Man those boys are a pretty good team and they battled hard,'" summarized Gregory. "I put some high expectations on our players at the beginning of the year. This is where I thought we could be. I think we’re a pretty confident team that can win on any given night."
What Icemen players had to say about Rick Gregory
"Great coach, easy to get along with, gets along with everybody. He knows his stuff. He's got a great sense of humour with the boys. He's everybody's friend. He keeps the boys under control on the bench."
-Michael MacDonald
"Great coach, knows all his stuff, good guy. He knows what he's talking about, and kinda relates to us because he's younger."
-Dylan Weaver
"Good guy, knows what he's talking about, good inspirational guy for the team. Being he's a younger coach, he knows how to interact with us pretty well, so all the guys respect him. It's pretty easy to learn from him."

Icemen take three-of-four points from division leaders
Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
It has been a long time.
The Icemen have played a lot of games since suffering a loss in regulation time.
In fact, one would have to go back more than two months to find the last time Wetaskiwin was beaten in the first 60 minutes of a game.
The date was Nov. 13.
On that Sunday afternoon, the Icemen dropped a 2-0 decision to the Sherwood Park Knights on home ice.
It was the last time a team didn’t need overtime, or a shootout, to defeat Wetaskiwin, by far the surprise team in the Capital Junior Hockey League during the 2011-12 season.
Wetaskiwin has played 16 games since that time, and has earned 28 of a possible 32 points.
The success on the ice has translated into a push for second place in the CJHL’s East Division, and a first round bye, something unheard of in Wetaskiwin prior to last season, when the team made the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.
Since that Nov. 13th loss, Wetaskiwin has rattled off 12 wins and has been beaten four times in either overtime or a shootout.
The biggest of those dozen wins came last Friday, when the Icemen invaded Sherwood Park, and came up with a 6-3 victory over the Knights, the top team in the CJHL with 55 points (27-5-0-1) in 33 games.
Lucas Recknagle scored a pair of goals and Travis Gano had a goal and an assist. Ryley Bennefield, Kevin Liner and Dylan McKay also scored for the Icemen, who received stellar netminding from Garret Montour, who blanked the league’s top team once the game hit the halfway mark.
The Icemen followed up by earning a point in a 3-2 overtime loss in Morinville Sunday, allowing the team to pick up three-of-four points against the division leaders this past weekend. Wetaskiwin had trailed 2-0, but rallied to tie the game before the end of regulation to earn the single point.
Wetaskiwins successful weekend improved the team’s record to 22-7-0-4, good for 48 points. The Icemen sit two points back of second place Beaumont and seven points behind top-seeded Sherwood Park. The top two seeds receive a first round bye.
Wetaskiwin has also cushioned itself from the fourth place Edmonton Royals, who now trail the Icemen by four points.
The third-seeded team will play sixth place in a best of 3 first round series, while fourth and fifth-place teams will also hook up in the opening round.
The Icemen, who lead the league in both goals for, and goals against average, have a home-and-home series with Fort Saskatchewan this weekend, travelling to Fort Saskatchewan Friday, Jan. 27, and hosting the Hawks Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
Wetaskiwins Travis Gano currently sits second in the league with 32 goals, just two behind Morinville’s Dalen Paul.
Gano is tied with Beaumonts Joel Tessier for fifth in the scoring race. Both players have 55 points.

Icemen still perfect in 2012
Wetaskiwin whips St. Albert
Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
Eight-straight goals propelled the Icemen to an easy 8-2 route of the St. Albert Merchants in a Capital Junior Hockey League game played Sunday at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
It was the third-straight win for the Icemen to start the new year.
The Merchants broke Garret Montour's shutout bid early in the first period despite getting outshot by a huge margin early.
But the Icemen scored three times before the period was out, twice more in the second period, and three times in the third period before St. Albert found the scoresheet for its second goal late in the game.
Ryley Bennefield, in his 2011-12 home debut, scored twice, as did Keaton White.
Bennefield, a Wetaskiwin native who started the year in the Western Hockey League and was released by the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League at the Jan. 10th deadline, now has four points in two games since re-rejoining the team he led in scoring in 2010-11.
Travis Gano scored his 31st goal of the season and added one assist, while Michael McDonald, Dylan McKay and Dylan Weaver also scored. Corey Bowie and Rit Spezzano each added a pair of assists.
The Icemen, now 21-8-0-2, sit two points back of second place Beaumont, and two points ahead of the fourth place Edmonton Royals with a game in hand.
The Icemen have now picked up points in 13-straight games with 11 wins and two shootout losses.
Wetaskiwin visits Beaumont Tuesday evening with an 8:30 p.m. face-off.
The next home game for the Icemen is Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. vs. the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks.

Icemen beaten by Fort Saskatchewan Sunday on home ice
Dale Cory, Wetaskiwin Icemen
The shots stood at 12-3 in favour of the hometown Wetaskiwin Icemen late in the first period.
But it was the visiting Fort Saskatchewan Hawks who held a 1-0 lead.
That situation proved to be a solid indication of the way this Capital Junior Hockey League game would go.
Playing in front of home fans Sunday at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre, the Icemen outplayed and outshot Fort Saskatchewan, but eventually lost the game 3-1.
For the Icemen, who opened the season with three-straight victories, it was a difficult loss to swallow.
The Hawks built up a 2-1 lead after two periods.
Wetaskiwin pulled to within a goal 63 seconds into the third period when Jordan Howe capitalized on a penalty shot opportunity.
Howe was hauled down on a breakaway, then deked the goalie to the glove side on the penalty shot to make it a 2-1 game.
However, a questionable interference call put Dallas Graham in the penalty box midway through the third, and Fort Saskatchewan took advantage, scoring a power play goal to go up by two.
The Hawks would hold the lead for good.
Wetaskiwin outshot Fort Saskatchewan 49-30.
The Icemen visit Sherwood Park Friday, Oct. 7, are back in action on home ice Sunday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. vs. the Edmonton Mustangs.

Icemen ready to hit the ice in style
Wetaskiwin to debut third jerseys in CJHL home opener Sunday against Beaumont
Dale Cory
It is going to be a big rivalry weekend for us boys, stressed Wetaskiwin Icemen head coach Rick Gregory while addressing his players at the start of Mondays practice. Friday in Leduc and Sunday against Beaumont here in front of our fans.
Indeed, the Capital Junior Hockey League schedule-makers certainly knew what they were doing when they planned out the 2011-12 season, which officially got underway this past Friday and continues until Feb. 12. The leagues 14 teams will play 266 games during that time, with each team playing a 38-game schedule.
The Icemen will open the season Friday in Leduc at 7:45 p.m. at the Leduc Recreation Centre, and will host their home opener at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre Sunday at 6:45 p.m.
It will be a big night for the Icemen, who will unveil third jerseys to commemorate their 20th season in the Capital Junior Hockey League.
Considering Wetaskiwin has developed a heated rivalry with the Schwab Riggers, and took the defending league champion Chiefs to overtime in a fifth and deciding game in last years quarterfinal playoff series, weekend games are sure to provide a great deal of entertainment for local hockey fans.
It was the first time in five years that the Icemen qualified for the playoffs. The 30-point improvement should have garnered head coach Rick Gregory the coach of the year honours.
That did not happen. However, considering last seasons success on the ice and at the gate, Gregory is more concerned with leading his team deeper into the playoffs, and challenging for a league championship, something the Icemen would not have thought possible a couple of seasons ago.
This year we have a nice mix of new and old. We have brought in several first year rookies, however, we have also brought in some valuable experience as well, including two players that have won junior B Western Canadian titles in the last two years, Corey Dupre in 2010 with the Tri-Town Thunder and Kevin Liner in 2011 with Blackfalds, said Gregory, who will also count on leadership from returning veterans. On the leadership side of things, we have several 21 year olds that will lead the way in that regard, such as Zack Pezderic, Michael MacDonald, Travis Gano and Mick Bronson.
That said, I've noticed that all returning players have taken some ownership over certain aspects of the team and we're trying to create an environment where its leadership by committee. The core of our team is our crop of '92s and they will be relied upon to lead by example both on and off the ice as well.
Gregory had 24 players at camp Monday, including three goaltenders. Veteran Brandon Wark is injured and did not participate in the workout.
We have lost our two top scorers from last year in Ryley Bennefield, who is still with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL, and Brian MacDonald, who is with NAIT of the ACAC. That said, incoming rookie Dylan Weaver coming to us from Midget AAA in Leduc should offer some help offensively as well as an incoming 20 year old, DJ Bennefield (Ryley's older brother). DJ scored eight goals in the three games last weekend and we're confident that trend will continue into the season. We also return our entire top line from last year with Gano, MacDonald and Michael Chorneyko, so we're hoping they'll continue where they left off, said Gregory, who does have some question marks heading into the season. Goaltending is a bit of wildcard right now. Losing Marcus Johnson means we have an open spot to fill and a big role at that. Quinton Bell is returning between the pipes and is presently battling it out with three other goalies to take the net. Ryan Fairgray, Michael Gudmandson and Garrett Montour are all in the running to snatch up one the goaltending positions.
While Gregory is blessed with 10 returning players, he also has a group of experienced veterans who have joined the Icemen from other teams, and also some young rookies who are expected to make an impact in the CJHL in their first season.
Incoming players that will make the most impact include Kevin Liner, who played parts of last season on the Olds Grizzlies. He should anchor our blueline along with another strong defenseman out of Slave Lake, Colter Tkach. Up front, Bennefield should add some serious scoring punch, and we're expecting big things from Dylan Weaver as well. Corey Dupre, another 20 year old import new to the team, will add speed, enthusiasm and some scoring as well, said Gregory. We also have several rookies that will try to find their way in their first year of junior hockey, such as local products Dallas Graham and Brett Halter.
The Icemen have a special event planned for Sunday with a promotion called Drive One 4UR Community. Brentridge Ford will have many vehicles available to test drive Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre. Ford will donate $20 from every test drive to support junior B hockey in Wetaskiwin. People who sign up for a test drive will get a free hot dog and free ticket to Sundays home opener.
Icemen go unbeaten on southern road trip
While many CJHL teams opened the regular season this past weekend, the Icemen took part in a tournament in Medicine Hat. Wetaskiwin beat Cypress (Maple Creek, SK) 8-4, scored a 9-2 win over Medicine Hat, and settled for a 4-4 tie with Coaldale after leading that game 4-0.
Gregory liked what he saw from the team.
Over the three-game span, we showed a propensity to score goals both even strength and on special teams. In the 8-4 win over Cypress, we scored four shorthanded goals, and in the game versus Medicine Hat, we scored five power play goals, said Gregory. We are hoping that will be a sign of things to come on special teams.
Leduc drops opener
The Schwab Riggers opened the CJHL season this past Sunday with a 5-2 loss in Morinville.
Beaumont opens season with win
The Chiefs were victorious in their first game of the season. Beaumont, out to defend its league championship of a year ago, doubled up the Bruins 4-2 at Strathcona.

A five-goal second-period outburst led the Wetaskiwin Icemen to an easy 6-0 victory over the Morinville Jets in a Capital Junior Hockey League (CJHL) exhibition game played Sept. 4 at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
Dallas Graham opened the scoring with an even strength goal 14:44 into the contest. It would prove the be the only goal the Icemen, celebrating their 20th season of junior B hockey in Wetaskiwin, would require.
DJ Bennefield, with a power play goal, Colter Tkach, Rit Spezzano, Myler Ellert and Dylan Weaver also tallied for the Icemen, who outshot Morinville 53-23.
Corey Bowie, Brian MacDonald and Michael MacDonald all recorded a pair of assists.

Hockey season returns to Wetaskiwin
The Icemen are back on the ice in preparation for the upcoming Capital Junior Hockey League season, looking to improve on last years 30-point jump in the standings
The high-pitched squeal of a blowing whistle greets those who enter the front doors of the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre on this particular Tuesday evening in mid August.
A coach can clearly be heard yelling out instructions.
And there is that constant scraping sound as hockey blades push off against the ice surface.
Yes, it is officially hockey season in Central Alberta.
The Wetaskiwin Icemen were the first team in the Capital Junior Hockey League to take to the ice when players got into uniform for the first time Aug. 16.
Head coach Rick Gregory, who engineered a 30-point improvement with an Icemen team that had not seen playoff action in five years, had nearly 40 players skating through drills on Day 1 of training camp.
Near the end of the workout, he barked out information that undoubtedly came as an unwelcome surprise, at least for his players.
Scrimmage was halted, and the players began skating lines.
Back and forth went the players, some showing the lingering effects of a summer filled with more beach time than hockey time.
Gregory had his troops in skating mode for a good 15 minutes.
After all, it is a training camp, and, conditioning camp, and Gregory wants his players to be as fit as possible when the CJHL regular season begins in one month.
So, what type of season might it be for the Icemen, who are celebrating their 20th season in the Capital Junior Hockey League in 2011-2012?
The team certainly expects to compete for a playoff position, given its success one year ago.
After making it into the post season for the first time in five years in the final week of the regular season, the Icemen stunned Sherwood Park in the opening round thanks to a thrilling overtime goal by Dylan MacKay in game three of the series, then received another OT marker from MacKay in Game 2 of the second round, pushing Beaumont to a fifth and deciding game in their series before finally succumbing to the eventual league champions.
MacKay is back in Wetaskiwin, and will be one of the players Gregory will count on for offence in the upcoming season.
Gregory will return three of his top four scoring forwards, with Brian MacDonald (10 goals, 29 points), Travis Gano (13 goals, 26 points), Michael MacDonald (11 goals, 22 points) and Jordan Howe (seven goals, 19 points) all back in an Icemen uniform.
Rit Spezzano, a speedy forward from Bridgeport, Conn. has also decided to brave another prairie winter. Two more veterans, Mick Bronson, and Micheal Chorneyko, who is expected to be in camp this week, are also returning to the Icemen.
I think there is a good assortment of veterans. There are quite a few guys vying for jobs straight out of midget in Wetaskiwin and Camrose, a few guys who can step in right now. Once Junior A teams make their cuts, a lot more players could become available.
-Craig Podritske Director of Player Personnel for the Icemen
On defence, Zach Pezderic will be an important player on the Wetaskiwin blueline. He will be a 21-year- old, and as one of the captains last year, is expected to provide leadership to some of Wetaskiwins younger players.
Three other local boys, Steven Walker, Corey Bowie and Brandon Wark, will also be back in the line-up for the Icemen. All three are all going to be 19 year olds, and are still young, allowing the group to grow together.
An addition to the blueline is Kevin Liner, a 6-2, 190-pound defenseman who played with Olds of the Alberta Junior Hockey League last year.
In goal, last years playoff MVP, Marcus Johnson, has graduated, along with defenceman and captain Cameron Dyck, and forward KC Lorentz.
Returning netminder Quinton Bell is slated to take over in goal.
Wetaskiwin-born Riley Bennefield, who tied for the team scoring lead, and for the MVP award, is not expected back. Bennefield totalled 29 points in 26 league games, and was the lone Icemen player to earn more than a point a game. He is at Portlands Western Hockey League camp at the moment.
But there is the potential for another Bennefield to be skating with the Icemen this season.
I think Rileys brother, DJ Bennefield, has been a nice surprise. A couple of other local boys, Dallas Graham and Brett Halter, have also impressed so far. We are waiting for players to come back. If they make it in Junior A, great for them. If not, it is to our benefit.
-Podritske

Second Annual Jim Pelehos Golf Tournament, alumni hockey games and Icemen season kick-off party set for Sept. 9-10, 2011
Wetaskiwin, Ab ‑The Wetaskiwin Icemen Junior Hockey Club is pleased to announced plans for a special upcoming event to kick off its 20th season of junior hockey in Wetaskiwin. Due to the popularity of the inaugural alumni weekend in 2010, the Icemen are unveiling what will be an exciting event featuring golf, hockey and camaraderie when they host the Second Annual Jim Pelehos Golf Tournament, Alumni Hockey games and season kick-off party the weekend of Sept. 9 and 10, 2011.
The Icemen Junior Hockey Club is excited about our upcoming season in the Capital Junior Hockey League. As most are aware, we are coming off a very successful season last year and want to build on that momentum for our 20th season of junior hockey in Wetaskiwin On behalf of our Executive and Board of Directors I want to thank the many volunteers in our community that step up and assist our hockey team. We could not operate without our volunteer base and it's very much appreciated.
-team president Rob Dyck
With the passing of Jim Pelehos - who was instrumental in bringing life to the junior hockey team 20 years ago - this past season, the Icemen have decided to name the golf tournament in honour of this dedicated worker. The golf tournament will be staged at Montgomery Glen Golf & Country Club on Friday, Sept. 9. Entry fee for the tournament, which will feature many former and current Icemen players, will be $100, and includes a round of golf, a cart, and a steak supper.
The Icemen will then host their alumni at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre Saturday, Sept. 10, with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Icemen, who begin training camp August 16, will play one of the two games, with former players from the past 19 season making up the bulk of the other three teams. These games will provide local hockey fans with a great opportunity to watch the new Icemen hopefuls in game action, along with the chance to renew acquaintances with those young men who wore Wetaskiwin blue, red and white over the years. Tickets will be just $10 to watch both alumni games at WCC.
With the Capital Junior Hockey League set to begin the 2011-2012 regular season in mid September, the team is excited to allow fans to meet the new players at a season kick-off party the evening of Saturday, Sept. 10. Boston Pizza Night will be hosted by the popular Wetaskiwin restaurant. Current and former Icemen players, coaches and staff, along with special guests, will be the guests of BP's Dave Dowler at his restaurant. Fans are also welcome to come out to the season kick-off party.
Our Icemen Alumni event Sept. 9-10 will bring together past and present players for what is sure to be a great weekend. Thank you to Dave Dowler at Boston Pizza for again contributing as a major sponsor of our club this upcoming season. He will be a great host for our Alumni Saturday night event. Hockey fans should plan on coming out to support these events, as the Alumni hockey games on Saturday will be entertaining.
-team president Rob Dyck
The Icemen fully expect the golf tournament to sell out, so those interested in participating in this great day of golf and hockey are urged to fill out a registration form as soon as possible. You can stop by Wetaskiwin Agencies, or Montgomery Glen Golf & Country Club to officially sign up for the golf tournament.

Icemen head coach Gregory planning for next season

Gregory set to return with Icemen
When the playoffs finish ... the real work begins for junior hockey coaches across Canada.
Its a common belief that the off, season is the most, important part of the year.
Due diligence with regard to finding talented hockey players will reap benefits when the ice goes back into arenas.
Surprise playoff run
It also helps when you surprise people with a successful playoff run.
I am hoping the season we had last year will get us more players at camp, said Icemen head coach Rick Gregory, who will spend the spring and summer watching as many hockey games as he can. Its funny how word travels fast, especially amongst players. There is kind of an urban legend now about the Wetaskiwin Icemen that may or may not be true. A thousand fans, good practice times, and a good organization. And what they say they are going to do, they do. It was big for us last year to gain credibility with the players, because they go tell their friends and word travels fast around the league.
Gregory, who will enter his second season behind the bench when the Capital Junior Hockey League kicks off another season in fall, was in Vancouver last week, guiding a midget division team in the 19th annual AAA Challenge Cup tournament.
With 650 games scheduled over a three, and, a, half day period, Gregory was sure to get his fill of hockey.
While he has some holes to fill with regard to the Icemen team that will take to the ice for the 2011, 12 season, Gregory has confirmed a core group of returning veterans.
During his address to the membership at the Icemen annual general meeting May 13, Gregory went through his player list, and answered the burning question on the mind of Wetaskiwin hockey fans, who will be back in uniform next season, and who will not be.
Icemen graduate three players
To begin with, three players, captain and defenceman Cam Dyck, forward KC Lorentz and goaltender Marcus Johnson, who played a major role in the Icemen advancing to the second round of the playoffs, have all graduated from the team.
There are some holes to fill because of graduation. One of those would be goaltending, because you have to replace half your goaltenders, so that becomes a priority, said Gregory. Quinton Bell will be returning in net, and will look to man that job unless somebody can take him out. Quinton showed last year that he has the ability to step up and play that role. The other two are 21, year, olds from Wetaskiwin, great guys who put a lot of heart and soul into this team, and left on a high note.
The Icemen will lose a few players who have decided to pursue their education in fall.
Ty Ronneberg is headed to Mount Royal University and Dusty Villeneuve will attend the police academy in Lethbridge.
Brad Hoult, who is eligible to return as a 21, year, old next year, is expected to finish his schooling, and is unlikely to suit up with the Icemen.
Craig Cobbett is also not expected back.
Bennefield unlikely to return
Wetaskiwin, born Riley Bennefield, who tied for the teams scoring lead, and for the MVP award, is not expected back. Bennefield totaled 29 points in 26 league games, and was the lone Icemen player to earn more than a point, a, game.
Although Gregory would love to have back a speedy forward, he realizes that Bennefield, whose Western Hockey Leagues (WHL) rights were traded from Lethbridge to Portland near the end of the season, has a bright future ahead.
I imagine Ryley will be playing at a higher level next year, and if hes not playing at a higher level, hell end up back here, said Gregory. I think his goals are set high on Portland, and from there, I would imagine Junior A. Hes got lots of options, and I do not really have him penciled in at this point, because I am hoping hell stick in Portland.
Icemen expect veteran blueline group
As for those players coming back, all indications are there will be a strong contingent of Wetaskiwin products in an Icemen uniform next season.
Zach Pezderic will be a big player for us back on the blueline. He will be a 21, year, old. He was one of our captains last year, and we will look to him to anchor the blueline, said Gregory. We have also got three other local boys, Steven Walker, Corey Bowie and Brandon Wark. Those are our four returning defencemen. Steven, Corey and Brandon are all going to be 19 year olds, so they are still young. We are kind of growing as a group there.
Gregory will return three of his top four scoring forwards, with Brian MacDonald (10 goals, 29 points), Travis Gano (13 goals, 26 points), Michael MacDonald (11 goals, 22 points) and Jordan Howe (seven goals, 19 points) all expected back in uniform.
Brian, Michael and Jordan are local kids returning. Theyre all top, six players from last year, and well look to good things from them, said Gregory.
Local players, such as Dylan Weaver, Devon Buffalo, Michael White and Dallas Graham will all be given a shot if they choose to attend Wetaskiwins training camp.
Last year, I was almost looking for 20 players. I did not know what I had, and if guys wanted to come back. This year, its nice to know you are just looking to fill certain roles on the team, said Gregory. We have got our eyes on a few players. Its all out there until they set foot in Wetaskiwin, and once they get here, I think were got em. My policy is, Ive got to get them in the rink, and once theyre here, I think theyll see the kind of program were offering.

Dyck takes over as Icemen president

Icemen name new executive and board of directors
Despite enjoying a successful season that saw the team make the playoffs for the first time in five years, change is in order for the Wetaskiwin Icemen Junior B hockey team.
The Icemen held their annual general meeting this past Friday evening at the Drill Hall, at which time team manager Rob Dyck was elected to the top position, unseating Norris Bernier as president of the organization, which will enter its 20th season of play in 2011, 2012.
I am pretty excited to be elected, and I look forward to working with Norris (Bernier) as past president, stated Dyck after the meeting had come to a close. We have got some new people coming onto our board, and we are just going to try and ride that wave.
Dyck is referring to is the most, successful season the Icemen enjoyed in many years.
After suffering through seasons that produced win totals of four, three, nine and one, the Icemen made the playoffs in 2010, 11. After upsetting favoured Sherwood Park in a thrilling three game series, Wetaskiwin came within an overtime goal in the fifth and deciding game of ousting the eventual league champion Beaumont Chiefs.
Our purpose as a board will be to provide young athletes between the ages of 15 and 21 with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the game of hockey. It is the mission of our group to assist young persons in the advancement of their educational and occupational goals so as to produce well, rounded, community oriented leaders of sound character and integrity, said Dyck, who operates family, owned Dyck Insurance. Training camp will be getting underway in August, and that is when the real fun begins. I look forward to chairing the meetings, and working with the newly, elected directors.
Dyck has extensive hockey background
Rob Dyck grew up and played his minor hockey in Wetaskiwin. He spent three seasons with Red Deer College Kings, and won back, to, back national championships in 1978, 79 and 1979, 80. He was captain of the team in his final year. Those teams will be inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame next month.
Dyck coached for 12 years in the Wetaskiwin Minor Hockey Association (WMHA). He was a director and president for two years each in the WMHA. He coached the Icemen for a season, and was team manager last year.
Securing coaching staff priority for prez
After inheriting an Icemen team that won just three of 38 games in the 2009, 10 Capital Junior Hockey League season, first year head coach Rick Gregory guided Wetaskiwin to a 30, point improvement in 2020, 11, and into the playoffs for the first time since the 2004, 05 season.
Our coaching staff of Rick Gregory and Grant MacDonald did a tremendous job last year leading our club. My goal, obviously will be to reach a longer term agreement to ensure we have our coaches in place for the next few years, said Dyck. Recruitment is very important to the success of our team and having Rick involved with various coaching roles with Hockey Alberta is crucial in that regard.
Icemen financially sound
They may not be swimming in money, but the Icemen will enter the upcoming season on solid ground.
The team, which operates on a budget of approximately $110,000, has in the range of $50,000 in the bank to start the season.
The Icemen are fortunate to have a very supportive business community that wants to see junior hockey survive in Wetaskiwin, said Dyck. We are unable to function without the financial help from our sponsors, advertisers, bingo workers, game, day volunteers, and fans.
Icemen 2011, 2012 Executive:
President: Rob Dyck, Past President: Norris Bernier, Vice President: Dale Palmer, Treasurer: Jamie Young, Secretary: Marilyn Snedden
Icemen 2011, 2012 Directors: Allan Halter, Dean Billingsley, Dale Cory, Tyler Gandam, Rod Foster, Bud Williamson, Dave Morrow, Craig Podritske, Brian Simpson and Mark Elder

Icemen hand out team awards

Icemen awards handed out
This time, there was reason to celebrate.
This time, there was reason to look toward the future with optimism.
When the Wetaskiwin Icemen held their awards banquet this past Saturday at the Wayside Inn, the Junior B hockey team was able to do something it had not done in five years, hand out its trophy for Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs.
After suffering through seasons that produced win totals of four, three, nine and one, the Icemen made the playoffs in 2010, 2011. After upsetting favoured Sherwood Park in a thrilling three game series, Wetaskiwin came within an overtime goal in the fifth and deciding game of ousting the eventual league champion Beaumont Chiefs.
So, in front of about 150 faithful fans Saturday, Icemen manager Rob Dyck, emcee for the evening, had the privilege of announcing goaltender Marcus Johnsons name as playoff MVP. It was one of many trophies handed out through the evening.
Johnson, one of three graduating players from the team, rose to the occasion in the playoffs, and played his best hockey of the season to lead the Icemen into the second round, and to within a goal of the Capital Junior Hockey League semifinals.
My personal goal was to try and get this team into the playoffs, and once we got there, I knew anything was possible, said Johnson. I seemed to thrive on all the talk around town. I looked at it as a lot of pressure, but then I just channeled it into a positive, that all of these people were behind me and supporting me. It came through in my play. But I had a whole team behind me. It was not just me. I had a team and a town behind me. It was an unreal feeling.
Two other 21, year, olds, Wetaskiwin minor hockey products KC Lorentz and Cam Dyck, also took part in their last official function as Icemen players.
I guess the easiest way to put it is that for the last three years you came here to drink your sorrows away, and this year we came to celebrate. It was three years of build, up to one year for a climax, if that is a way to say it, opined retiring captain Cam Dyck, who spent four years with the team. I started my first season when I was in Grade 12. Now I am starting to feel a little old. It was definitely a great experience and a great journey being associated with these people. If one word described it, it is kind of sad to be leaving.
As for the other player awards handed out by the Icemen:
Mick Bronson was handed the Doug Randall Memorial Trophy as Wetaskiwins Team Player.
Zach Pezderic was named winner of the Memorial Award for his leadership, dedication and character. The award is voted on by Pezderics teammates, giving the honour a fair amount of presitige.
The Denham Ford Most Valuable Player of the Year was Travis Gano.
Corey Bowie was named Budget Beer and Spirits Best Defencemen.
The Jaspers Studio Rookie of the Year trophy will be shared by forwards Brian MacDonald and Ryley Bennefield. The two snipers also shared the Pioneer Chrysler Top Scorer award.
Defenceman Cam Dyck was named winner of the Parkland Agencies Unsung Hero award winner.
The Wetaskiwin Co, op Most Sportsmanlike Player award winner was Michael Chorneyko.
Fans who attended Icemen games were able to select their favourite player through voting, and the winner was Dylan McKay, who thrilled Wetaskiwin fans with overtime winning goals against Sherwood Park and Beaumont in the playoffs.
And finally, the Presidents Award, an outstanding service award handed out to an Icemen director, went to Craig Podritske.

Icemen name award after Brian Sutter

NHL legend Brian Sutter attends Icemen banquet to hand out awards
He was known for his grit and determination, for his hard work, his never, give, up attitude, and most importantly, for his leadership.
When the Wetaskiwin Icemen unveiled a new award at their year, end banquet this past Saturday, they could not have chosen a more, suitable name to put on the trophy.
The Sutter name is well, known in hockey circles throughout Central Alberta, in Canada, and across the hockey world.
And, for years to come, the Brian Sutter Leadership Award of $1,500 will be divided among the recipients, who will be picked by the coach based on their experiences through the season, on and off the ice.
The new award came through Gord Yake, one of the original board members for the Icemen. Gord is also one of the principles on the Sutter Fund and identified that they would like to support an award program for the Icemen, explained Icemen director Brian Simpson. Brian Sutter is a natural for leadership, as demonstrated by his words at our award banquet. The Icemen organization is not only about hockey, but we feel we have a role in developing leadership on and off the ice in support of the community. The descriptors we use are strength of character, ethics, doing the right thing, doing the best that you can, understanding your sphere of influence and the role expected of you, integrity, academics, individual development, need and volunteering in the community. These are all factors in leadership, and it is not necessary to hit on all the points, but at least one of them.
Recipients of the Brian Sutter Leadership Award in the first year were Cam Dyck, KC Lorentz, Brad Huolt and Michael MacDonald.
It is a real honour, being it is the first award, said Dyck, who captained the Icemen in his final year of junior hockey eligibility. Everyone goes through their challenges. It is extremely easy to lead a team when you have players like we had this year. We had a great group of guys, which really made the job for me and the other assistants easy.
After missing the playoffs for four, straight seasons, and winning just 17 games during that time, the Icemen advanced to the second round, and to within an overtime goal of knocking off eventual champion Beaumont this season.
Success does not come easy otherwise everybody would have it, said Sutter, who spent 12 years as an player with the St. Louis Blues, and coached in the NHL for 13 seasons. Like I said to the players, all they have really done now is set a standard for what they can be. Now they have to live up to that standard, and set higher goals. If they are good at what they are doing here, they are going to be good no matter what they do in life. The city can be proud of them, and they can be proud of themselves. It was special to be here tonight.

Icemen fall to Chiefs in OT

Amazing playoff run by Icemen comes to an end
It came down to the final game.
And, when 60 minutes of regulation time was still not sufficient to decide a winner, Wetaskiwin and Beaumont went to overtime.
When the Icemen and Chiefs took to the ice Sunday evening in Beaumont for the fifth and deciding game in their Capital Junior Hockey League East Division semifinal series, their entire season was on the line.
In the simplest of terms, the winner would move into the leagues final four showdown, and lay claim to being an upper echelon team in the Junior B circuit, while the loser would see its season come to a dramatic conclusion.
Dramatic indeed.
The Icemen and Chiefs battled through 60 minutes even at one goal each, setting the stage for a thrilling overtime.
Three minutes into sudden death, Wetaskiwins Jordan Howe was awarded a penalty shot after he was hauled down on a breakaway.
Howe, with the series on the line, attempted to deke Beaumont netminder Chris Roy, who had the best goals against average in the league during the regular season, but was stopped.
And the game played on.
Then, with just over six minutes gone in overtime, Aaron Linaker, who totalled eight goals and 13 points in the five game series, centered the puck for Karrick Martin, who beat Wetaskiwin netminder Marcus Johnson on the short side to send the Beaumont Chiefs into the CJHL semifinals with a 2 1 victory.
I thought we carried the play in the second half of the game. We out, shot them and out, chanced them. They got one that went in and we didnt, lamented Icemen head coach Rick Gregory. There is not much you can say to the guys to make them feel a whole lot better. We pushed that team to the brink and never backed down. That is something our guys can be real proud of.
The series made it to the final game after Wetaskiwin took the first two games by 3 - 2 scores, with Dylan McKay and Michael Chorneyko scoring overtime winners, while Beaumont battled back to tie the series with a 9 - 3 victory at home Feb. 22 and a 3 - 2 win in front in front of more than 1,000 fans Friday at the Wetaskiwin Civic Centre.
After a scoreless opening period Sunday, Wetaskiwin gained some momentum early in the second period. With Beaumont enjoying a power play, Dylan McKay, with two overtime winners to his credit so far in these playoffs, gained control of the puck at his blueline, sped down the left side, and beat Roy with a high wrist shot for a 1 0 Wetaskiwin lead.
Beaumont tied the game at the 10:14 mark of the second period. With Cameron Dyck sitting off four minutes for high sticking, the Icemen had a golden opportunity when Ryley Bennefield was sent in on a breakaway. He tried deking the Chiefs netminder, but Roy swallowed the puck up in his pads, although it popped loose and he was forced to reach behind to save a shorthanded goal.
Unfortunately for the Icemen, Beaumont gained possession, came back down the ice, and Justin Woods wrist shot from the slot beat Icemen goaltender Johnson high to tie the game.
It was Beaumonts first shot on goal of the period, and a timely one that turned into a goal.
The teams battled back and forth in the third. Rit Spezzano had a glorious opportunity with a couple of minutes remaining when he was left alone at the side of the net, but Roy made a great glove save to keep the game tied.
At the other end, Beaumont enjoyed a two, on, one in the dying seconds, but Johnson got his arm on the shot, and the score held to force overtime, setting the stage for Martins winner.
For the Icemen, who had missed the playoffs four, straight years and totalled just 17 wins in the process, it was a difficult end to what turned into a successful season. Wetaskiwin made it into the post season, recorded a first, round upset of Sherwood Park, and had three home playoff dates which saw crowds in excess of 800 for both of the Beaumont games.
Three Icemen, goaltender Marcus Johnson, defencemen and captain Cameron Dyck, and forward KC Lorentz, all graduate from the team.
Those three were a big part of turning around this franchise. We won back the city, and we won back the respect of the league, added Gregory. Now we know what it is going to take to come through these playoffs. You have to sacrifice and be disciplined. I think we learned a lot of those lessons this year that will pay dividends in years to come.
Gregory, who has 19 possible returning players next season, confirmed after the game his intentions to be back behind the bench, along with assistant coach Grant MacDonald.
Giving the success the duo had in turning the Icemen franchise around in 2010, 2011, the board of directors are sure to bring both back with the goal of taking the team to the next level in the CJHL.
On another note, Bennefield has been called up to play with Portland of the Western Hockey League.

Icemen vs Chiefs

Sunday, February 27, 2011
Well it all boils down to the best of 1 series now between the Icemen and Beaumont.
The two teams battled again Friday night in Wetaskiwin and Beaumont came out on top to tie the series and fight off being eliminated.
The Icemen came out and scored the first goal which really got the fans that packed their way into the arena going.
They held on to the 1-0 lead until half way through the second period when the Chiefs got one past Marcus Johnson to tie it at 1-1
The Chiefs added another goal in the second period and lead 2-1 at the end of 2.
The Icemen tied it up half way through the 3rd period and it looked like we were headed for another overtime thriller.
Then with 6:29 left in the period Beaumont scored to pull ahead 3-2.
The Icemen had a few good chance to tie it up again but just couldn't capitalize..
The final game of this series now switches back to Beaumont on Sunday, February 27, game time 5:00 pm.
The Wetaskiwin Icemen got off their game Tuesday night when they travelled to Beaumont for game 3 or this quarter final.
With the Icemen ahead in the series 2-0, they could of wrapped it up in this best of Five Series had they won Tuesday.
Beaumonts top guns struck early and often on their way to winning game 3 by a score of 9-3. Beaumont lead all the way with leads of 3-0 after the first and 8-2 after 2 periods.
The Icemen clearly need a win Friday night when the two teams clash in game 4 in Wetaskiwin.
They are playing the best hockey of the season right now and their goal tending has been amazing.
The Icemen know what they will have to do to eliminate Beaumont, we will need the goal tending and the type of Hockey they have played in the 4 previous games of the play-offs.
GAME 4 WILL BE PLAYED IN WETASKIWIN THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, GAME TIME IS 7:30

Icemen scored first with a goal from Hard working Brian MacDonald.
Beaumont came back with 2 of their own and lead 2-1 at the end of two periods.
Just before the half way mark of the 3rd period Icemens Michael Chorneyko tied the game up at 2-2.
The first period sudden death proved nothing as the teams went to their dressing rooms still tied at 2-2.
With just a little more than 5 minutes played in the second overtime period Chorneyko added his second of the game and sent the fans home with lots to talk about.
Once again the Icemen had plenty of shots with over 60, giving them well over 110 shots in the two games against the Chiefs.
As he has done through out the playoffs, Icemens Goal tender Marcus Johnson came up with another solid effort.
Game 3 of the series shifts back to Beaumont on Tuesday night February 22. Game time is 8:30.

The Wetaskiwin Icemen travelled up to Beaumont last night for game 1 in this best of 5 series against their rivals the Chiefs.
With the number of Wetaskiwin fans in attendance it was almost like playing in front of their home town fans.
These fans did not go home without lots to talk about either, as the Icemen out shot the Chiefs by 20 shots.
On the score board the Chiefs scored first and went into the dressing room after the 1st period with a 2 - 1 lead.
The Icemen answered the call in the second period but score remained 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Half way into the 3rd period Icemens Mike "Meat Shop" MacDonald tied the game at 2-2 after regulation time.
The Chiefs came out flying in the first over time period but could not get anything past Icemens Veteran Tender Marcus Johnson.
It looked like we would be going into the 2 nd overtime period when, with only 44 seconds remaining, Dylan McKay potted his second overtime winner in the past 2 games to give the Icemen the 3-2 overtime win.
Game two in this series is Sunday night, February 20th, at the Wetaskiwin Civic Center.
With Sherwood Park taking game 2 by a score of 3-1, the Icemen had there backs against the Wall going into game 3 in Sherwood Park.
Sherwood Park came out and scored first, making it 1-0 for Sherwood Park at the end of the first period.
In period two things didn't start off any better as the Icemen fell behind 2-0 before potting a goal of their own.
Starting the 3rd and final period of the season for 1 of these two teams, the Icemen found themselves behind 2-1.
The Icemen tied it up in the 3rd and added another to make it 3-2 in the Icemens favour.
The Knights were not going down without a fight and tied it up with less than 2 minutes left in regulation time.
Going into the Overtime period with the Icemen short handed, things didn't look really good for the Wetaskiwin boys.
Sherwood Park had their chances but Icemen tender Marcus Johnson came up with two unbelievable point blank saves.
With only 48 seconds left and the Icemen creating a lot of traffic in front of the Sherwood Park net, Icemen's Dylan MacKay beat the Knights goal tender and the Icemen put an end to Sherwood Parks season by skating away with a 4-3 OT WIN.
The Icemen will now take on the Beaumont Chiefs in the quarter final round beginning in Beaumont Friday evening, February 18th. Then return home for game two in this best of 5 series on Sunday February 20th.
Exact times for these game will be posted once they are confirmed.

The Wetaskiwin Icemen came out Friday night and played a very solid game and it paid off.
The Home town boys scored first and came out of the opening period with a 2-1 lead.
The second period saw the Icemen net their 3rd goal and go to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead.
During the final period Sherwood Park fought back and tied it a 3-3 late in the period.
With only a few minutes left in Regulation time, just when it looked like we would be headed into over time, Ryley Bennefield got another shot past the Sherwood Park defender to once again give the Icemen a one goal lead at 4-3 and thats where it staid to the final buzzer.
Once again our Goaltending was solid and K C Lorentz deserves a big pat on the back for his efforts.
Game Two will be in Wetaskiwin on Sunday February 13 at 8:00 p.m.

The Wetaskiwin Icemen played their final regular season game of the 2010-2011 Season against the St. Albert Merchants.
The Icemen scored first and never gave up the lead.
Going into the final period the Icemen lead 3-1 and added another in the final period to win the contest 4-1.
Wetaskiwin still don't know if they will make it into the play-offs as the Leduc Riggers have one game remaining.
If Leduc wins their final game against Sherwood Park both teams would finished tied.
They also have the same number of wins and losses against each other.
It then goes to Goalies for and against. Right now the Icemen have a 4 goal advantage over Leduc.
When Leduc takes on Sherwood Park they would have to win by at least 5 goals to eliminate the Icemen from post season play.

It looks like the playoff picture won't be know until the last period of the last game for the Home town Icemen.
Last night they battled Morinville Jets in the Civic Center.
Icemen scored in the first period and it looked like it might stay that way as there was no scoring in the 3rd.
Going into the third period it wasn't until almost the 15 minute mark when the Jets snuck one by Goal Tender Quinten Bell to tied the game.
At he end of regulation time the teams were still tied at one. The 5 minutes O/T period settled nothing at all.
Then the shoot out, both Goalies stopped the first 4 shooters.
Icemens 5th shooter was also shut down. Then the Jets sent their 5th shooter down and he snuck one by the very solid Bell to end the game.
Wetaskiwins last game of the regular season is on Sunday February 6th at 8:00 p.m. when they travel to St. Albert and take on the Merchants.
In order for the much improved Icemen to continue into the post season, this game is a do or die game for the locals.
Come out to St. Albert and cheer the boys on to victory and once again prove WE DO HAVE THE BEST FANS.

Sunday night the Icemen hosted the Edmonton Red Wings, here at the Civic Arena.
The attendance at the game was very impresssive, but the final results of the game weren't.
The Icemen came out of the dressing room and quickly scored first.
Just minutes later the Red wings added one of there own and never looked back after that.
By the end of the first period the Red Wings had a comfortable 5-1 lead.
The second period wasn't much better as the Wings added 3 more to end the period at 8-1.
The third period saw the Icemen add one but the Red Wings answered with 2 more to take the game 10-2.
As we enter into the final week of the regular season the Icemen host Morinville, FridayFebruary 4th at 7:30, then travel to St.Albert Sunday evening to end the regular season against the St. Albert Merchants.
These are two very big games for the club as it will decide where they will finish the regular season and if they make it into the play offs.

Things didn't get any easier for them on Sunday when they travelled to Edmonton to face the Edmonton Royals.

The Icemen battled back with 2 goals of their own to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period.

The Wetaskiwin Icemen came up flat on probably there biggest weekend of the season.
Friday night they lost at home to Fort Saskatchewan 5-3
Then Sunday afternoon they hosted the rival Leduc Riggers.
The Icemen came out with a quick 3-0 lead only to have the Riggers come back and tie it up by the end of the 3rd period.
The 5 minute overtime period solved nothing so they went to a shoot out.
Both teams went through 4 shooters before anything was settled.
Icemens 4 shooters were all blanked while the Riggers snuck one by goaltender Quinten Bell for the 4-3 Leduc O/T win.
All three of these teams are fighting for a spot in the play off round with only 3 points seperating 4th place and 7th place.
The Icemen now go on the road for their next three games against Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton Royals and then the Edmonton Warriors.

The Icemen played their first game after the two week Christmas break lastnight against the Sruce Grove Regals.
The Icemen came out quick and scored the first goal of the game with only a couple minutes gone in the 1st period.
A few minutes later Captain Cam Dyck, banked one of the boards that caught the Regals goalieout of play, only to have it called back by the referee on an off side.
That called back goal seemed to take the wind out of the Icemens sails as Spruce Grove came back in the second period and early in the 3rd to make it a 5-1 game.
In the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period Icemens Mike MacDonald was pulled down as he charged in on the Goalie and was awarded a penalty shot. MacDonald made no mistake putting the shot past the Regals netminder and made it 5-2.
Minutes later Icemen Rookie Ryley Bennefield tucked one just under the crossbar as he cut toward the net to bring the Icemen to within 3 goals.
Time ran out on the Icemen before they could generate any more offense and the Regals skated away with a 5-3 win.
Icemens next action will be Sunday Jan 9, 2011 at 6:45as they take on the Stony Plain Flyers right here at the Wetaskiwin Civic Arena.

After a sloppy first period by both the Icemen and the Riggers, the Riggers lead 1-0.
In the second period the Icemen picked it up a notch and added 2 goals to take a 2-1 lead after two.
Early in the 3rd period Icemen goalie, Quinton Bell made the stop from the Leduc point but misjudged the rebound and the game was tied 2-2.
There was no scoring in the second period so the teams went into a 4 on 4 sudden victory Overtime.
Half way through the overtime period Icemen's Brandon Wark shot a bullet from the point that staid right along the ice to beat the Riggers goalie and end the game with the Icemen taking the 2 points.
Icemens next action is Sunday Dec 19, @2:00 p.m. when they take on division rivals Sherwood Park.
This will be the Icemens last game before the Christmas break.
THE WETASKIWIN ICEMEN EXECUTIVE, COACHES, PLAYERS AND STAFF WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ALL THE HAPPINESS AND HEALTH IN THE NEW YEAR.
